Resolutions

On every new year’s day, every birthday, every anniversary, we come up with a set of goals to achieve over the 365 that follows. As to why we need a particular day for these, as any day is a good day to work towards something beneficial, is beyond logic. But suffice to say, such momentous days definitely motivate us to ditch our bad qualities and start gaining good ones. Although most of us achieve a splendid start to realizing these goals, we somehow lose steam midway more often than not. The key to sustaining the momentum till we attain these goals depends on 2 core factors: setting the right goals and prioritizing amongst these to focus our efforts on a select few of utmost importance.

Each year brings with it a new set of challenges and ambitions, that don’t necessarily coincide with those from the previous years. What felt like the right thing to do previously may seem wrong now and vice versa. After all, it took us more than a century since the industrial revolution to recognize the ill effects of mindless overuse of natural resources. However a certain amount of forward thinking is essential to come up with resolutions that would leave a lasting positive influence in our life. This way, it also provides with an added incentive to stick to the goal and accomplish it, as the gains are much greater when compared to the amount of efforts required.

As we grow up and old, life does change multi-dimensionally. At every stage, we are suddenly faced with multiple facets of our lives left with ample scope for improvement. Although this presents an abundant choice of paths towards enhancing ourselves, the right steps need to be taken at the right stages for them to be meaningful. This is where the second factor comes into play: priorities. Being a human being with about 70-80 years to spend on earth, we wish to achieve a lot many things and to fulfill all our dreams. And in this process, more often than not we end up juggling one too many things to focus upon and not perfecting any of them. Instead, aiming for goals that are an immediate priority not only gives us a better chance of working towards achieving them, but these would also come of use greatly in the future.

And finally, yes, there’s no hard and fast rule to save our resolutions for the next big day to come up. There’s no harm in resolving to do something good, right from the very moment we recognize the need for it. In fact this only avoids procrastination and is thus a much better approach. Have a great year ahead! Make it a 2016 full of memories worth looking back at!

  1. Good one HK! I too am of the opinion that, to start a good venture or a good thing, any time is a good time. I have always treated new year eve like any other day. As mentioned, most of us, lose interest midway through. Sustained efforts can only fetch any start a meaningful, productive end result.
